Weapon/Armor combined?

Would having a worn weapon like my gauntlets also count as having armor?

No, they are simply weapons... however, since you started with dust, if you were to buy yourself an armor, you could say that you're adding a new protective layer to your gauntlets, and now they would be both weapon and armor. Note that they would still be upgraded separately though.
