You can Pick your aura when you make a character, and you cab get lien by going on hunts and defeating Grimm.
...Or by stopping the WF from stealing stuffs
And you get exp from posting in RP topics and also hunting grimm. You can spend that EXP on upgrades and such.

Is there a table for how much EXP you need to upgrade something? Or do mods just judge based on the desired upgrade?

It's in the weapon/dust rules the amount of exp needed per upgrade
